Kaito is Kira's foster brother because his father was killed before Kaito's birth, and Kaito's mother died at child birth. His mother's childhood friends took Kaito as Kira's brother. They have a raven as a pet named Nishrak. His new family lived in Japan until Kaito and Kira were both 6. Kaito was trained in kendo (Japanese sword class), archery, and various martial arts, while in Japan. Then they moved to Florida, Nebraska, and California in sucession, never staying in the same place for long.

Then the family moved to Wisconson and adopted a girl named Maria who was 8 at the time while Kaito and Kira were 10. Then when Kaito and Kira were 17 and Maria was 15, they found a baby dragon and raised it, hidden from everyone else along with their friends Osiris, and Ishtar. Later that year an accident happened that gave Kaito ghost powers and caused Kira to turn into a werewolf. The others have similar effects. Everyone's parents were killed in the accident, but Nishrak the raven and the dragon named Fafner survived. Kaito, Kira, and Maria moved to Amity Park after being trained in the art of ghost fighting by Vlad Masters/Plasmius.
